Vac Stack Tutorial With 80mm Tubing

  1. Make sure you have clean hands and the area is clean
    1. Clean the 80mm tubing inside and out if at all dirty.
    2. Clean the 45mm tubing inside and out it at all dirty.
  2. Gather your color, about 26 pieces
  3. Lay the color out how you want it to be
    1. Make sure you are using the same diameter color rods and length
    2. When you are happy with your color selection and you have the right amount of colors you will take the colors and put 2 rubber bands around it to hold it together.  Then you will trim the glass to be the same length on the tile saw.
  4. With the color cut at the same length, now clean the glass so it is clean, clean, clean.  Lay the color out in your pattern as your clean it.
    1. Make sure while you do this your hands are clean.  You should have them cleaned with soap and water. If this is done you will not get any hand grease on the glass and it will be beautiful.

Setting up the Lathe

  1. Set up 80mm tubing in lathe
    1. Make sure that the suction is hooked up and is working before any color is put into the 80mm tube
  2. Put in the 45mm tube with the end closed in the left side of the big lathe.  You will need to be able to blow into this end, so make sure it is also hooked up to your tubing so you are ready when the time is right to put the flame on.
  3. Make sure that the tubes are running straight in the lather.  If you have to align them, do so before you add any color.

Putting in the Color

  1. Put the 45mm tube about ½-⅔ inside the 80mm tube.
  2. Now lay your cleaned color inside the 80mm tubing around the 45mm
    1. Start with your color layout with one side being the bottom and working 1-2 pieces of color up the sides until you go around the tube.
    2. Sometimes you can get 27 pieces in the tube.
  3. Now use the leather strap and wrap around the 45mm tube and pull all color up to it so that it makes a clean line of color rod and all the tips are up against the leather strap.
    1. When doing this make sure that you pull the leather strap back far enough that you will have the 45mm tubing extend past the color about 1 inch
    2. Now slide the 80mm tubing over the color fully so all the color and 45mm is inside the 80mm tube
  4. Now add the coolest reduction flame of just the lynx to the set up, on just the edge of the tubes and color.  Let this go for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add a Bunson burner to the setup next to the lynx flame
  6. Increase the lynx flame to be a neutral flame just on the edge of the 80mm.
  7. After about 2-4 minutes add the outer flame of the delta to the glass setup, but make sure this is still a small small addition of flame.  Let the heat penitrate into the tubing and gradually increase the heat so the edge of the glass can then be paddled down from the 80mm down to the 45mm tubing sealing in the color.
